What to Take on a Hike

Hike packing is not an easy job! You need to know exactly what, how much and how. Every excessive thing is a needless burden on your back.

Check our list of items for a multi-day hike in a warm season (May-October in the Carpathians).

GEAR

Everyone

The capacity of backpack depends on the compactness of your gear. Also, the longer and more difficult hike requires a larger backpack. The average size for women is 65 litres, for men – 80 litres.

When choosing a backpack, pay attention to the convenience of the suspension system and the waist belt.

And do not forget about its waterproofness: raincover is obligatory in all hikes.

The tent should have two tents for proper rain protection (the outer tent must withstand at least 1500 mm of precipitation).

Tents, as a rule, can accommodate 2-4 people, so if you go alone, but in a group, it is rational to find a person to live with. If you go with us we will help with this.

In summer, it is often comfortable to sleep outdoor, looking at the stars and listening to the night of mountain life. However, the nearby tent adds confidence, saves from the sudden rain and allows you to hide things from morning dew.

You choose it by the comfort temperature (for the summer hike it’s 0 … + 5); weight and fill (synthetic fill – lightweight, fast drying, down fill – warmer, more expensive).

You need it for thermal insulation and relative comfort of sleeping on the ground.

In the summer, a polyethylene foam mat is ok.

They help to evenly distribute the load between your back, legs and hands.

A cheaper alternative is wooden branches found in the forest.

For group

Paper card, GPS, application in your mobile phone.

Нитка, голка, булавка, армований скотч тощо.

CLOTHES

It’s perfect to have a waterproof, high (to fix the shin) boots with a thick sole. Shoes must be used, not new!

The worst choice is sneakers in which you’ll feel every stone on the way.

Lighter shoes (sandals, slippers) are needed to rest your legs in a camp.

Synthetic trousers are best suited. They dry quickly and protect from the wind.

The ideal choice is trekking trousers that are transformed into shorts.

The bad choice is the jeans that restrain your moves, dry long and become heavier when wet.

Its purpose is to protect you from wind and rain.

If the jacket is not waterproof or if you doubt its ability in severe precipitation, take an extra raincoat or poncho (also covers a backpack).

Even in summer evenings in the mountains at the altitude are cool. Fleece jacket is the perfect choice due to its weight and thermal insulation properties.

Thermal underwear takes out excess moisture and warmes up in the camp.

In the summer hikes, it is ok to wear a synthetic T-shirt and underwear.

For physical activity, T-shirts of synthetic materials (as a replacement for thermal underwear) are best suited: they will dry quickly. It is better to use cotton in camp and for sleeping.

It is important to change socks every day (or to wash them during the hike and completely dry before wearing).

OTHER STUFF

1 – 1.5 liters.

The ideal option is a bottle (flask) from special materials that are safe when reused (food aluminium, stainless steel, Tritan). It’s useful not only for the mountains but also for city life.

Lightweight, durability, compactness. The metal or heat-resistant plastic items are best. The bad choice is ceramics, glass.

Headlight is obviously most convenient. However, in summer it is quite enough to have a flashlight on a mobile phone (if it is not necessary to save the charge of its battery).

  • toothpaste and brush;
  • soap / universal detergent, environmentally friendly;
  • small microfiber towel;
  • toilet paper;
  • hygienic lipstick.

Wet wipes are taboo for us in hikes. It takes decades for them to decompose. Their number around popular camping sites in the Ukrainian Carpathians is just scary.

An excellent alternative is toilet paper / the cotton pads and peroxide (or micellar water, chlorhexidine).

In addition to these things, you need to put products in your backpack. What to take and how to calculate the amount we tell in another article.

Note that if you join a group, the common food is evenly distributed among everyone.

Most likely, you will NOT need these:

  • notebook, tablet, other big electronic gadgets;
  • chargers;
  • paper books;
  • decorative cosmetics;
  • glass containers.

About the weight of the backpack. Divide your own weight by 4 and get the maximum weight of the packed backpack for a comfortable hike. In the 6-day trek, we recommend 18 kg for men and 13 kg for women.
