Krynta Ridge

Duration 3 days
Difficulty Easy
Distance 25 km
Main points Uhorsky (Hungarian) rocks, Skupova Mt, Krynta ridge, Zmiinska Mt, Krynta mountain meadow
Price 55€ (1800 UAH)

The Krynta ridge is located on the right bank of the Black Cheremosh River. To get there we will come to the village of Zelene, Verkhovyna district.

This is a simple hike with beautiful landscapes, forests and meadows. We will meet shepherds, taste local cheese. The highest point of the hike is the  Skupova Mount (1,579 m). We will also hike between the Uhorsky (Hungarian) rocks which are 30-meter stones that stand vertically among the spruce forest.

Our nights:

We put tents on meadows with landscapes. In clear weather, it is convenient to watch the stars and the moon. We will spend the first night near the Hungarian rocks with views of the Cornohora ridge.

For whom:

Generally, a hike in Ukrainian Carpathians doesn’t require special physical training. This hike is especially suitable for beginners, children, photographers and those who like a moderate pace.

In this hike we take an amateur telescope with us: being far from the city light allows us to see craters on the Moon, the colours of stars, the rings of Saturn, the satellites of Jupiter, the Orion Nebula and the tired tourists on the next ridge.

   1 DAY

 7 km  + 500 m

From Ivano-Frankivsk, we go to the village of Zelene. There we cross to the other bank of the Black Cheremosh and begin the ascent to the ridge. In two hours we have lunch and rest.

On this day we will see the Hungarian rocks which are huge stone monoliths in the middle of the forest. We spend the night near these rocks on a mountain meadow with views of the Chornohirskyi ridge (the highest in Ukraine).

   2 DAY

13 km   + 400 m

Today we are walking on relatively flat terrain.

In the morning we climb to the highest peak of the ridge – Skupova Mount (1,579 m). From here we will see a bunch of different mountains: in the south – the ridge of Hryniava and Chyvchyny, in the east – valleys with big Hutsul villages, and in the west – Chornohirsky and Marmarosky ridges.

Then, without significant ascents and descents, we will go along the mountain road to the north along the Krynta ridge. Along the way, we will meet many huts with shepherds, where you can taste local cheese.

In the afternoon we will climb another peak of this ridge – Zmiinska Mount, 1356 m. We finish the day on Pokonechnaya meadow.

   3 DAY

 5 km

On the last day, we recommend you wake up earlier and walk around because you no longer need to save energy for a long day’s hike.

We need to walk 5 km to the village of Krasnyk, from where we return back to Ivano-Frankivsk by minibus.

We meet at the railway station in Ivano-Frankivsk city in the morning. Then we go by bus to Zelene village, which is the starting point of a hike. The distance between Ivano-Frankivsk and the mountain village is 125 km and 3,5 hours of road.

The end of the hiking part of the route is in the village of Mykulychyn. On the last day of the hike, we will be around 6 p.m. in Ivano-Frankivsk city.

The size of the group is from 4 to 10 participants. Usually, we hike with small teams (up to 6 people): it’s easier to find a common language, more comfortable to go at one pace. And also it is a requirement of the ecological principle leave no trace in the wild.

The weather in the Carpathians is changeable, so any forecast is unreliable. Before the particular date of the tour, we’ll try to tell you what weather to expect as accurate as possible.

On average, in the Carpathian Mountains during the warm period of the year (May-September) the temperature is + 15 … + 20 degrees in the daytime and + 3 … + 7 in the night. If the day is cloudy and rainy, then the temperature in the afternoon and at night is approximately the same: + 5 … + 15. The general principle of weather formation in the mountains is as follows: with every hundred meters of the climb the temperature decreases, and the number of precipitation increases.

The rains here fall three times more often than in the other part of Ukraine; and in May and September, frost is possible at night. The wettest month in the year is June, the driest and warmest is August.

There are a lot of rains, so you should not save on waterproof clothes and gear. Also, it’s often windy: a good jacket and a sturdy tent are obligatory.
